Decoding Shadripus in Astrology

Introduction

The purpose of human life is to liberate themselves from cycle of reincarnation. On Physical plane human beings are composed of Panchabootas. On Psychological plane they are composed of Trigunas. The proportion in which they exist in our psyche triggers the Shadripus or six enemies of the mind. These are Kama (lust), Krodha (anger), Lobha (greed), Mada (arrogance), Moha (delusion) and Matsarya (jealousy). These six enemies of mind are hinderances in the  soul’s liberation.

Bhagavadgita Verse 14.5 explains how the human birth is composed of the three humors Sattva, Rajas, Tamas.

सत्त्वं रजस्तम इति गुणा: प्रकृतिसम्भवा: |
निबध्नन्ति महाबाहो देहे देहिनमव्ययम् || 5||

O Arjuna! Born of Prakriti, the three Gunas, Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas bind the imperishable Jivatma in the body.

Further Lord Srikrishna explains in Verse 3-37 says, the Trigunas (Sattva, Rajas and Tamas) are the catalyst which trigger the  Arishadvargas in human beings.

श्रीभगवानुवाच |
काम एष क्रोध एष रजोगुणसमुद्भव: ||
महाशनो महापाप्मा विद्ध्येनमिह वैरिणम् || 37||

“The Blessed Lord said: It is desire, it is anger, born of Rajoguna (the impulse of action), all-consuming and all-evil. Know this as the enemy here”.

Bhagavadgita Chapter 16 Verse 21 explains the way in which the Kama, Krodha and Lobha succumbs to birth- rebirth cycle.

त्रिविधं नरकस्येदं द्वारं नाशनमात्मन: |
काम: क्रोधस्तथा लोभस्तस्मादेतत्त्रयं त्यजेत् || 21||

“Kama, Krodha and Lobha form the triple opening into Hell. They are the three evils (Dushtatrayam) which directly lead man into the lower worlds. When these gates are shut by dispassion, love and detachment, there is no fear for man”.
